Not all gunshot wounds are fatal if a trained person acts quickly. This course teaches students how to self-treat and help others with gunshot wounds prior to the arrival of medical professionals to greatly increase the chances of survival. Students will learn to treat catastrophic bleeding at different parts of the body using improvised devices and tools commonly found in commercial IFAKs. Students will also learn about other preventable causes of death associated with gunshot wounds and how to treat them in the field. This course is taught by instructors certified by the College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and follows and expands upon the Department of Homeland Security’s “Stop the Bleed” curriculum and “You are the Help Until Help Arrives curriculum.” Students are advised to dress in loose comfortable clothing in order to participate in the practical exercises. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion and a voucher for discounted IFAKs through INSIDER’s affiliate.
